Dry Brushing for Lipedema

Lipedema is a condition that affects many women worldwide, approximately 11% of the female population to be exact. When not managed, it can lead to pain, swelling and a disproportionate accumulation of fat in the legs, hips, bum and arms. Some women also believe it can present itself in the abdomen.

There are various conservative treatments available, in an attempt to slow progression and relieve some of the painful symptoms of lipedema. Dry brushing for Lipedema has emerged as a popular natural method to help manage Lipedema. But what exactly is dry brushing and how can it benefit women with Lipedema?

What is Dry Brushing?

Dry brushing involves using a firm, natural-bristle brush on dry skin, typically before showering or bathing. It has roots in Ayurvedic medicine and is known for its benefits in skin exfoliation, improving circulation and promoting lymphatic drainage.

For women with Lipedema, dry brushing is a holy grail self care routine that offers a non-invasive way to support their health and manage their Lipedema symptoms.

Benefits of Dry Brushing for Lipedema

  1. Improved Lymphatic Flow: One of the most important benefits of dry brushing is the stimulation of the lymphatic system. For women with Lipedema, enhanced lymphatic drainage can help reduce swelling and discomfort by encouraging the removal of excess fluid and toxins from the tissues.
  2. Exfoliation and Skin Health: Dry brushing helps to remove dead skin cells, leaving the skin smoother and softer. This exfoliation technique can also aid in the absorption of topical treatments, such as moisturisers.
  3. Enhanced Blood Circulation: Regular dry brushing can boost blood flow to the brushed areas. Increased circulation may help alleviate the feeling of heaviness and fatigue often experienced in the legs and arms of women with Lipedema.
  4. Pain Reduction: Many women with Lipedema report pain and tenderness in the affected areas. Dry brushing, through its gentle massaging action, can help reduce pain and improve overall comfort.

How to Dry Brush for Lipedema

  1. Choose the Right Brush: Opt for a brush with natural bristles and a handle long enough to reach all areas comfortably.
  2. Brush in the Morning: Dry brushing is best in the morning before showering, as it helps to invigorate the body and prepare the skin for cleansing.
  3. Use Gentle Strokes: Start with light, gentle strokes and gradually increase pressure as your skin gets used to the sensation. Always brush in an upward motion, starting at the feet and moving towards the hips, and from the hands towards the shoulders for the arms.
  4. Pay Attention to Affected Areas: Spend extra time on areas affected by Lipedema, but avoid brushing too hard to prevent skin irritation. For me, my main areas of focus are the backs of my thighs and my upper arms.
  5. Follow with Moisturising: After dry brushing and showering, apply a moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and supple. This is especially important for women who wear compression garments for lipedema regularly.

My Experience with Dry Brushing for Lipedema

I’ve owned a body brush, like the one linked here, for around a year. Although I’ve dipped my toe in the body brushing pool, I’ve never really committed to it properly.

Around a month ago, I decided to take it seriously. Every morning before getting dressed, I brush in upwards motions from my ankles to my upper thighs. I start softly in long, sweeping movements. As my skin has got used to the sensation over the past few weeks, I’ve started applying more pressure.

In all honesty, it’s hard to tell what the effect has been so far, my skin does seem a little smoother and tighter. But, only time will tell. I plan to continue for a few more weeks so I can monitor my symptoms and skin elasticity.

So, is Dry Brushing for Lipedema Worth it?

Dry brushing for Lipedema is a simple yet effective technique that can be easily incorporated into your daily self care routine. While it is not a cure for Lipedema, it can help alleviate symptoms and provide some much needed relief.

As with any new treatment, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting dry brushing, especially if you have sensitive skin or any other underlying conditions.
